For example, you can give the thermos a name – useful if you have several at home, for example – the thermos also receives its software updates via the app. Once you connect the phone to the Travel Mug, it gives you a lot of added value. When I start the app now – while the thermos is switched on – it has an immediate connection.

However, while I was writing my review of the thermos, Ember decided to roll out another software update, with the tweak: “an improved Bluetooth LE connection.” Now you cannot blindly rely on the improvements listed, so I spent a few days working with the thermos again.Īnd? Right, Ember solved the problem. For the first few weeks of testing, I had a problem with a thermos that simply wouldn’t connect to my phone. You can have a lot of bad luck as a reviewer, because the experience of almost every electronic device can be improved with a software update, which was also the case this time. If you’re lucky, the thermos will be paired directly with your phone… It worked for me the first time after 20 minutes. Now touch the Ember logo long enough until it says ‘pair’, then open the app and select the Ember Travel Mug. When the thermos is charged, it’s time to visit the Google Play Store or Apple App Store for the ‘Ember app’. Once in the adapter, the thermos will start charging – Ember herself also recommends charging the thermos before using it for the first time. The advantage is that you can place the Travel Mug in the charging station without plugging anything in.

There are two dots on the charging station that touch the metal strip at the bottom. Charging is not via a USB port, but uses a specific charger from Ember. The unpacking experience of the Travel Mug is quite ‘boring’, because you only have the Travel Mug and a charging station. This also includes the Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) connection used to remotely control the thermos – more on that later. To make this possible, Ember has managed to build in a battery that powers all the pieces of technology in the Travel Mug. This keeps your drink warm for longer, says Ember. Ember, an American manufacturer of the Travel Mug, but also a ceramic mug, uses heating elements to keep the drinks in its products at the right temperature. The disadvantage of a normal thermos is that it will eventually let your drink get cold – and to be honest, I’m not a big fan of that form of iced tea. To keep my tea warm, I normally use a Hydro Flask thermos.

I personally like to drink liters of tea every day – whenever possible, of course. Whether it turns out to be a success story for the Ember Travel Mug remains to be seen. When asked if I could test a smart thermos, I didn’t hesitate. Review Ember Travel Mug: your coffee (or tea) is now also connected
